What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

Ignition interlock devices (IID), are sometimes referred to as breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIID), or car breathalyzers.

An IID is a small device that’s installed directly into a vehicle's ignition system. Once it is installed, the device prevents any driver from starting the car while intoxicated. Here’s how they work:

• Before starting, the driver must use the interlock device to take a breath alcohol content (BrAC) test. They will blow into the device as directed to complete the test.
• If they pass, the car will start.
• If they do not pass, the car won’t start and the failed test will be reported to the monitoring authority.
• The IID may request random retests during trips to ensure the driver stays sober.

Often, ignition interlock devices are required for people convicted of DUI, DWI, OWI, OVI, or OUI. The state regulations vary, but most require an IID for some time as a condition of regaining driving privileges. Interlock devices must meet government criteria determined by the state.
